Does the 2-in-1 scarf mask protect against COVID-19?

No. The 2-in-1 scarf mask is a face covering and evidence suggest that face coverings do not protect you from being infected by the virus.

Although they are a requirement on public transports and other public places, face coverings are not the same as the surgical masks or respirators used by healthcare workers.

However, if you are infected and yet to develop symptoms, face coverings like the 2-in-1 scarf mask may provide protection to people who you come into close contact with.

Are two layers of material enough to protect those around you?

While the UK government [reference: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own] recommends face coverings to have at least two layers of fabric, the WHO recommends three layers.

For added protection, some of our inventive customers have suggested inserted a piece of non-woven fabric, a coffee filter or a folded up piece of kitchen towel in between the two layers of material.

If I wear the scarf mask, do I still have to social distance?

Face coverings of any kind do not replace social distancing. The UK government say that you must wear a face covering in places where social distancing is difficult or impossible, e.g., on public transport or in a shop.

If you experience symptoms, you and your household must isolate at home. Wearing a face covering does NOT change this.

Can bacteria from my neck or hands be passed to my mouth or nose?

It is possible, but you can minimise the risk by washing your face covering as regularly as possible. You are perfectly fine to wash your 2-in-1 face mask with your other laundry items with normal detergent. It’s quick-drying to ensure it’s ready for your next outing.

As with any face covering, you should wash or sanitise your hands before putting on, taking off or adjusting your scarf mask.

How do I wear the scarf?

If you’re somewhere where you’re not required to cover your mouth and nose, you can wear the 2-in-1 scarf mask as a traditional scarf by simply tying it around your neck, as shown in the below gif.
